cell phone signal booster?

hello all,

was wondering if their was something like an internal cell phone signal
booster. i have an apartment and get no reception inside and in the winter
time here in philly it isnt fun. i get a somewhat ok signal outside. i call
verizon and they said they didnt have anything. anyone know a fix?

If you are talking about those sticker "boosters" that you place under
the battery, don't bother. They are junk; a pure scam. You cannot
legally modify the phone to boost the output. You must use an
external antenna connected by cable to your phone, or you can look at
a more expensive, but easier to use, powered repeater. Do a Google
seach for "cell phone repeater". That should give you an idea of the
systems available. With a so-so outdoor signal, you should ignore the
passive systems. They won't do you any good.

First, get a passive external antenna (about $50) and try it on. If it still
doesn't help you enough, get a signal booster that's about $200 - $500 a
piece and requires electrical power (and the external antenna you just
bought).

In certain parts of my apartment I get only 1 bar, switching to no
signal, switching back to 1 bar, switching to analog etc. Needless to
say, I had a lot of calls breaking up and dropping.

However, if I stood in front of the window in those same rooms and
pointed the antenna toward the window, I got enough signal (around 3
bars) and almost no breaking up.

Not wanting to practically have to hang out the window, I got a very
small 3" antenna called the magnamount from www.alternativewireless.com
along with the connector for my phone (VX 4400). They are very specific
that these antennas need to be on a metal base and so I took mine and
put in on the lid of a Ball Jar. It boosts my signal just enough
(especially if it's near the window), that I have no more problems.

Although I look a little ridiculous, I've been known to roam around my
apartment carrying this little ball jar lid and the 3", 2 oz. antenna
with me as I converse.

If you can find any kind of signal in your apartment, it might be enough
for this to grab onto it. I don't know their return policy but if you
could exchange it for something more substantial if necessary, it might
be worth a try. I'm very happy with the solution. That is, until VZ
finally puts up another cell tower!

Doesn't a ground plane need to be a bit bigger than a "ball jar lid"?
That is, to fully optimize reception.

A Ball jar lid would be around 7 cm or so in diameter.
That's pretty close to half a PCS wavelength.
Besides, the half-wavelength criterion isn't very critical.
Even if the ground current spills onto the outside of the coax,
the antenna will still function well enough.

my apartment is long with several rooms spanning somewhat different
angles. Carrying my little ball jar lid and MagnaMount around makes it
possible to get a solid connection from anywhere in the house.

I will try a larger lid and see if the signal improves signficantly.
Although most of the time, this works quite well and I'm amazed at how
small and light it is in relation to the signal strength improvement.

I was just thinking that because this device has a built in ground plane, you
could carry it around instead of the jar. It would be less breakable, if it
was dropped. : ) I know it says it has to be near a window, but I thought
maybe it would work in other places. I may try one. If I do, I'll let
everyone know if it works well.

On your 4400, go into the service menu (Menu 0, 000000), 2, 1. When it
deigns to display any readings at all, the Mode will be either A(mps),
C(ellular), or P(cs). P is 1900, the others are 800.
