charge battery without AC adapter

Is there any way I can charge a battery for Toshiba satellite pro L40 without the AC adapter as the connection port for the mains ac supply seems to be faulty

No simple way, no. If you're referring to the DC jack when you say "connection port for the mains," sometimes those can be replaced with soldering equipment, saving the expense of replacing the entire board.

Unless your laptop supports a dock with a built in charging no.... (my old dell E-6500 workhorse does)..
