Two questions:

1) Can you still catch viruses visiting only sites like, say, tomshardware.co.uk, facebook, cnn.com, ebay.. important and known sites?

2) I see all antivirus selling companies demanding $50-80 a year.. scary: are there cheap but good antiviruses?

Yes bitdefender is good, avg and norton are a bit more dated...You really should'nt have to pay for antivirus. i see lifetime subscriptions on slickdeals.net for free after rebates. Truth is its not enough, you need a combination of things, like taking measure on the router level, and monitoring both incoming and outgoing traffic. Being cautious of the sites you visit etc.
