I have a HP Pavilion 15-cb0xx (they seam to hid the model numbers these days) with a Elan clickpad mouse (Windows 10 64-bit)

for a few months now, on and off, the pad sometimes seams to 'stick' a fingerprint reading so it thinks a finger is still pressed which isn't. this can grow to a point and it thinks 3 fingers are touching it, so when I try to use the pad, it acts like one of the muitl-gestors is being used.. this is very annoying and the only fix I've been able to figure out is to place my hand flat against the whole of the pad and then remove it. I can't see any real dirt built up or anything. and the drivers appear up to date (8/5/2018). It does seam to me like a possible but minor hardware issue but i'm not sure. any advice?
