We are having our house rewired with a central feed, the directv boxes will be hidden with an IR remote, but they ran coax from the feed point to the tv locations. My electrician said that we could just use a coax to HDMI conversion cable but in reading other posts, it seems that it wouldn't be in HD at that point and we might as well just put the directv boxes at the TVs and plug in the hdmi cords from the box to the tv. Is this the case?

There is no viable coax to HDMI conversion. This is what the TV boxes do.

Yes. Coax into the TV box, HDMI out to the TV.
