I have a directv receiver in my den. I have a coaxial output running to a set in my kitchen. I just bought a HD tv for the kitchen. Can I convert the coax to HDMI at the kitchen

Yes, but it will have to be an active converter. see link - could maybe find something cheaper but yes the converters exist

Why not just put the receiver where the TV is at then?
Is your directv setup a newer one with the second room/child receivers (the smaller one in the picture bellow):

^What he asks. What's the problem placing the box next to TV? Don't you have to change the channel anyway? clicker's sensor is on the box.
