College laptop purchase

I need help choosing a laptop for my son who will be starting college in the fall of 2014. He plans to study nursing. Dell is offering a free Venue 7 tablet with the purchase of an Inspiron 15 5000 Series. What do you recommend I look for in a laptop?

Don't buy office though. Instead, leverage the .edu e-mail address he'll be getting: http/office.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-office-365-university-FX102918415.aspx . Check also with the University or college to see if there's a further discount/offer. $79.99 for 4 years in my opinions well worth it. Plus, once your 4 years are up, there may be a newer version of Office.
