Hi,
I am a relatively new into enterprise mobile application
development. I am looking for a clear overview or
comparison of different mobile platforms initiatives from
Microsoft namely WinCE, Pocket PC, Windows Mobile, etc.
Is there any link that clarifies on which platform is for
what kind of devices or applications, etc? In absense of
such information, I am little confused on the options
available to me as a mobile application developer.
Sometimes it seems there is a overlapping and I can do
things in multiple ways. Any links that provides
Microsoft's vision, roadmaps, on how they ultimately
evolve into mobile application development paradigm,
would be of great help to me.
Regards,
-Hari

WinCE - the basic operating system over which Pocket PC/Windows Mobile are
based.

PocketPC - the way that the OS shell for the small handhelds was called in
its two first versions (Pocket PC and Pocket PC 2002). In parallel there was
also the Smartphone OS shell. Both based on WinCE 3.0

Windows Mobile - with the release of the second major upgrade, MS decided
that there was a big confusion between the device names and the OS itself.
So they renamed the OS to Windows Mobile for Pocket PC (or Windows Mobile
for Smartphone). These are based on WinCE 4.2.

Chris De Herrera's site is full of useful info. It might be a bit
overwhelming for you at first.

In the context of newsgroups, "newbie" is actually a useful word. In
particular, I just used google
(http://groups.google.com/advanced_group_search) to look up
newbie developing programs pocket pc
and got 45 hits. A quick glance suggests some will help you along, but
you may not find much real info. I also looked up
newbie pocket pc programming
and got 541 hits. These look more promising.
