Compress files to fit on a DVD

I have a DVD that fits about 4.7GB, but the file I want to put on the disc is close to 6GB. Apparently using Winrar or 7zip is never going to get it small enough.

Is there a way to compress it so it's small enough to fit on the DVD? I'm using the DVD as storage, so the files on the DVD don't need to be functional at all while they're compressed.

I'm looking for something free, because I doubt I'm ever going to do this again.

No way that you are going to get that much compression if winrar and 7zip (two very good programs) don't get close. Just break the file up over two disks, which you can do with winrar.

Does that mean that you have tried them and they don't get the file small enough, or what? I'm slightly confused by the word "apparently". What sort of a file is it - what does it contain?

What types of files are you trying to compress? Images, video, data?

7zip is very good but for extreme results you may check PAQ family of compressors.
Dr. Mahoney is the original developer, his works are very useful.
