Hi,

I have a LG SR906SB 5.1 sound system that is perfect for what I want. I have several HDMI inputs, and the single HDMI output goes to the TV, while the audio goes to the 5.1 speakers, through normal copper wires.

Problem is, as you understood, watching TV/movies/playing games with speakers annoys the wife. I have bluetooth headsets, but not an easy way to connect them. The only output from the 5.1 sound system are the wires.

I was thinking of a device that will "intercept" the wires, and with maybe a switch, redirect to a cheap bluetooth transmitter. I am thinking of numerous ways that this could fail, but it's a nice challenge: how can you "hack" my hardware so that I can add bluetooth transmission to my 5.1 sound system?

Solution
If the TV has line out or a headphone jack, you may be able to get a bluetooth transmitter for it. This is by far the most easy way. TV's tend to downmix to 2 channel for these outputs

Trying to get the signal from the wires IS possible, but since it is surround sound you would have more work than it is worth.

This is what I've been doing with success.
I bought a bluetooth transmitter connected to the TV headphone jack.
When I want to watch TV without headphones, TV is on mute, sound system is unmuted.
When I want to use the headphones, sound system is muted, TV is unmuted.
Works fine.
