Howdy, I got this Sony Vaio PCG-7144m with the screen broken. I tried to use it using an external VGA monitor. I use the Fn + F7 (key with lcd icon on it) holding it for like 5 min since the start but did not work. The owner also told me that hes unsure if the laptop has windows password on it, so he gave me the pass. If there is. I then try turn on the laptop press enter (for the selection for run windows normally, safe mode, etc. assuming it will pop because of constant force turn off.) then put the password and the fn + f7 but did not work. I also tried some other combination with fn + f?? Assuming might work but didnt. I tried also not pressing enter on the startup just straight up putting the password and the fn + f7 but didnt work as well.
After that I gave up on it and now I asking for y'all help for it. Also if there's no possible solution i will replace the lcd. And I have a question, Can i replace with other sony vaio screen that is not exactly like it, since i intend to use an external monitor (if theres no solution on the first problem) or shud be the same. Thx in advance !

Plug in the external monitor as the laptop is starting up. You should see some evidence that the laptop sees the screen like a BIOS post screen or even he windows startup screen. If the external monitor can't tell it's connected then it's likely that you have bigger problems than just the screen.

The only thing I would suggest for now is to remove the hard disk, in this way, it will not load Windows. Try again what I wrote before, start the laptop and close the lid, it will have to used the external display by default. With this test, you will be sure that the GPU works. If you have nothing on the screen, maybe the broken screen was not the first but the second problem.

Just to save time but when I turn on the laptop the screen have a white light on it and theres this one day that I reduce the brightness of the screen pressing the fn+f?, so i dont think the gpu is broken?

the answer is simple, the Vaio's will start using the 2nd ext monitor only after windows is past a certain point, the BIOS and boot funtions keys wil not be shown at the ext monitor, best way is to put a clean windows on it with no passwords and install it next to a 2nd pc so you can mirror the keys you will have to push on the vaio during install, then with the new windows on it you wil be able to use the fn keys to switch to 2nd monitor, i had same problem with a vaio with a half left side working int monitor, it would switch to ext only afer the password was entered.

Good luck.
