connect older dvd/vhs to tv

tried using red/white/yellow output to a hdmi converter and attached to my samsung hdmi input. I got nothing but a flickering screen and a dimmer looking screen but no video

Do you know that the DVD/VHS works?
Did you try the converter with a different source or on a different TV? Maybe it's bad.
It is an active converter and not a passive cable? That never works.
