my asus laptop has black dots and lines growing on the screen. I'm told this is a pixel problem. But I would like to know if I can connect a monitor to it and use it that way? If so, can I use any monitor or does it have to be brand specific/compatible?
Thank you.

that normally occurs when there is an issue with the connection to your laptop screen, any monitor will be completely fine regardless of brand, when looking to get one the only thing you need to do to ensure compatibility is make sure monitor offers the same connection as your laptop. e.g if your laptop has VGA out then you will need a VGA in monitor or a converter.

I've seen this caused by either a bad screen, or a bad video card. In the latter case, you will also get the lines and dots on an external monitor. So take your laptop to a friend's house and try hooking it up to his monitor first, before you spend the money on a monitor for yourself.

While doing this would be a safe option 90% of the time this problem occurs due to an issue with the laptop screen connection.

Well, it would at least eliminate that other 10% possibility. And easier to do than opening up the laptop to check the screen connection only to find out that isn't the cause. :)

You can connect any monitor (even TV) as long as that monitor has the same video input as your laptop' output (eg VGA, HDMI). Once connected, your laptop will recognize that there is second monitor attached, and you can go to Display Properties to select that monitor and make it primary.
