Connecting my LG TV to speakers?

I've connected my LG 43lf540v to my laptop via HDMI, but I want my audio to play through my extrenal Sony Hi-Fi speakers. The Hi-Fi has 3.5mm audio in, and when I use an RCA to 3.5mm cable I can't get the audio to play out of the Hi-Fi and it continues to play through the TV?

Any help would be appreciated

Go to the TV options and set the speakers to use the external set, although if that 3.5mm output on the TV is a headphone out it should have disabled the speakers automatically. Another option would be to set the default audio on the laptop to the standard sound card instead of HDMI and connect the Sony set to the laptop.
