Connecting two laptops(Windows XP) together?

I just bought a new laptop and I would like to transfer my files from my old laptop to it, but I do not have an internet conection. Can I use a direct ethernet cable to transfer the data?

Yes you could either use WiFi/LAN while in Vista(WiFi transfer support only in Vista) to transfer files btw two laptops.
