I have a Samsung 50" Plasma (http://icdn6.digitaltrends.com/image/samsung-un46es6500-review-rear-ports-1000x791.jpg) and I want to connect it (ie - the audio) to my older receiver, an Adcom GTP 450 Preamp/Tuner (http://img.canuckaudiomart.com/uploads/large/1018821-adcom-gtp-450-preamptuner.jpg). I've tried using standard RCA red/white cables but it doesn't seem to work. Am I missing something obvious? Thanks.

I should add that I previously had this hookup but with a directv cable box in between the tv and receiver and the audio worked fine. Did the cable box work as some type of converter for the audio and therefore would I need something like this? https://www.amazon.com/Converter-NUTK-Composite-Adapter-Supporting/dp/B01DLIEKCQ/ref=sr_1_7?s=aht&ie=UTF8&qid=1467141895&sr=1-7&keywords=hdmi+audio+converter

I just looked at the pictures that you linked to and you seem to need a TOSLINK cable out of your TV, but your receiver does not support that type of input. You can not hook these two devices together without another device such as a DAC.
