Consistent FPS Drops Across Multiple Games After RAM Upgrade!

Jan 23, 2016
Model: ASUS K56CM
OS: Windows 10 (64-bit)
Processor: Intel Core i7-3517U CPU @1.90GHz
RAM: 8 GB (2x4 GB)
HDD: 900 GB

I have an ASUS K56CM laptop that I purchased around three years ago, primarily for browsing and gaming. It was only until last year that I started to experience performance drops that gradually became more and more noticeable More importantly, the games I would usually not have an issue with are now experiencing drops in FPS.

I took the laptop to a repair place and had the RAM size increased from 4 GB to 8 GB, as I noticed that memory was consistently at a high level of usage (80% average). I also had the internal fan cleaned, as it was reaching high temperatures every time it was on for over an hour, regardless of what I was doing.

After the upgrade and clean, the only real issue that still remains is the drop in FPS in almost every game I play. I've already made sure that the NVIDIA card is being used for all games instead of the integrated Intel one, via the NVIDIA Control Panel.

I constantly have the Task Manager on and both Memory and GPU usage rarely exceed 50% when playing anything. Disk usage fluctuates below 15% at times, but never reaches anything large while playing.

The temperature of the laptop sits at around 50C when browsing, and reaches up to 80C when playing. I have ordered a Cooler Master fan to hep with the temperature, but am not certain if that is the root of the problem.

The game I primarily play is League of Legends, which sometimes drops to 10 FPS during large battles. I have the general settings on Medium, and can barely get a smooth 50 or 60 like I used to.

Is there anything I can do to increase my FPS in games, given my laptop's current state?

This is my first time posting on a forum for tech help, so I apologise in advance if I've missed any obvious details. If there is any additional information I could provide to help with the issue, please let me know. Any and all feedback is appreciated!

Please do try these troubleshooting steps that may help in solving the issue.

- Go to Device Manager and uninstall the graphics card driver.
- Check Programs and Features and uninstall anything related to your graphics card.
- Next is to download and install the latest driver from the manufacturers site.
- Once installed reboot your laptop for all the changes to take effect.
- If the same problem will persist after doing these steps please do try doing the clean install method.
- Here's the link:
- Do also run Windows Update and install all updates available.
- Also, was the additional RAM a DDR3 1600 MHz SDRAM?
- Last resort would be to do another clean install of Windows.

Thank you very much for the reply!

So I've tried all of the steps you have recommended, only just finishing the Windows reset earlier today. There is a slight improvement in the general FPS of the games I play, but nothing too noticeable. There is no other issue with my laptop other than games like League of Legends experiencing drops in performance. Memory usage rarely exceeds 50%, and temperatures are now peaking at 70C (from 80C before the Windows reset).

I've been playing around with the NVIDIA Control Panel, as I believe it may have something to do with the issue. I've found that certain settings will slightly increase/decrease FPS of intensive games, while the actual in-game quality settings are set at around Medium. Other than that, it may unfortunately be damaged hardware. But since literally no other problems have been noticed, it seems strange that hardware would be a problem.

Thanks again for your time!
