I've got a 400+ meg Divx movie that I want to convert to *something* that's less processor intensive. There's a few other movies (more like episodes) that I have that will play just great on my p2 266 laptop.

If I use the 'summary' screen to get the specs, how do I convert the video/audio? And just what do I convert it to?

What type of codec was used on the movies that play fine on your machine?

Most divx movies play fine on my 400cel but I start having trouble on full screen flicks at 29fps. You could just recode back to divx at lower res and lower bitrate. Scubdude can help if you want to code to mpeg1. See http://www.doom9.org and http://www.divx-digest.com and http://www.vcdhelp.com for info/downloads.

Hmm, i'd tend to favour MPEG1 i think over MPEG 4 if processor speed / ability is a factor.
Whichever codec you use though, decreasing the resolution to something around 352 x 288 (for PAL) and also as mentioned the bitrate a little (in MPEG 1, use the videoCD standard of 1150 for video and 224 for audio) should help alot.
Ironically (or maybe not), the display and frame rate should dramatically improve from say, playing the film covering 3/4 of your windows screen, to if you just enlarge the display to fullscreen (ie dont have anything at all windows related showing on the screen).

Don't believe in skepticism.

I downloaded the tryout of premiere6, and looked at the movie. It's using Divx 5.01 pro, 126kbps, and mp3 at 116kbps. Something like 480x224 and 23.97fps.

I can convert it down to mpeg1, and it drops the processor usage (haven't tried it on my laptop yet). But there's no sound. How do I hook the sound up to the clip?

I open the .avi movie, and select 'export clip', and setup the options from there. But the sound doesn't follow the movie, even when I select 'uncompressed'. I don't get a 'mp3' selection, but I get the msft adpcm (whatever).

Anyone help me with the sound?

Need more information .... i use Premiere to convert so i may be able to help, but tell me...
What codecs have you got?
I cant remember what are stock codecs, but anyway try downloading the bbmpeg (free) mpeg1 and mpeg2 encoder from http://www.doom9.org/ (under 'downloads').

Do this, and let me know.

k. I'm on it. Thankx!

I have virtual dub someplace, should I be using that instead? I just figured premiere would work a little better...

When you do a 'export clip', does the sound go through onto your clip without you doing anything else?

Seems like it should, since I can select an video/audio codec for the export, but maybe there's something else I'm not doing. Either way, it should be able to convert from mp3 to msft adpcm?
