cracked screen, in safe mode

I have a HP 2000, my son stepped on it and cracked the screen, now its unusable, unfortunately its also in safe mode. Is there a way to get out of safe mode without seeing the screen? I need to retrieve documents that are only stored there. I have a external monitor hooked up, but still not able to view screen. Help!!!

Leave it for another 5 minutes, connect the VGA cable between your external monitor and your notebook. Now hold down the fn button and press f4 once. Tap the right arrow three times and then hit enter to see if this will transfer the display.
