Any reccomendations? I have an old ssd that is only partially reading on my new system. It's called "system reserved" and only the unused space is being detected. It had win7 on it as the primary drive for the old rig, and now the new rig says the drive is empty, but only the unused portion of the drive is free, so the original files are still there.

So I'm going to try data recovery software, but haven't used such a thing in a long time. No idea what is good, reliable, preferably free or free trial recovery software these days.

Most != all.

But try that software. See what is may or may not retrieve.

OK...so try the TestDisk application.
You will need a different drive to maybe possibly kinda sorta recover some of this data to.
Don't be surprised if it does not recover in exactly the same way it was.

And please, please, please....take this as a heads up.
The last several chapters of your novel, or any critical data, should never live on one drive and one drive only.

Backups.
