Dell Latitude D420 Operating System?

Hi,
I recently found an old D420 lying around and it's in excellent condition so I'm reviving it. I bought an ssd for it and I am curious as to what operating system to install to make the most of the laptop. It came with XP but seeing as XP is a bit outdated I'm hesitant to reinstall that. I'm not sure if W7 or W8 would slow it down too much though. I'm open to Linux suggestions too!
Any suggestions?

Hi there
Windows 7 should run ok on that system. Would not suggest 8 though, hardware a little too old for that.
Of course, Linux always a great option - which distro depends on your level of experience with Linux.
