Desktop to TV, HDMI to mini HDMI problems with display, only works for ~3 seconds

Today I tried to connect my Desktop to my TV, and I am having some problems. An image of the Home screen of Windows 8 will show for about 2 to 3 seconds, then disappears. I have tried multiple TVs, all with the same results. Both the Monitor and the desktop remain turned on, and I can use the computer. If I click around and then Try to reconnect, I will see whatever I clicked on, but once again only for two or three seconds until it goes completely black. I should mention I have done this before with a different cable and it worked fine, but I haven't used the computer in 4 months and have given away the other cable. The Mini HDMI does seem to be able to move a little freely, but it isn't loose. The TV does recognize a signal even when the screen is black, but still nothing shows up.

After more tinkering, I have discovered it is not something wrong with the display itself. When booting is "active" (forgive me for my lack of computer banter), the display is fine, and I can press f2 to alter some of the things on my pc. Is this something wrong with the software instead?
