DesktopPC Speakers No Sound: Optical Jack to Receiver to Speakers

I've had this setup working for about a year and now I no longer get any sound from the speakers. I have a digital audio S/PDIF high definition audio device on my desktop pc, which connects to a pioneer receiver via a rear panel optical jack. The speakers are 5.1 Polks connected normally to the receiver with speaker cable. I see the device in Windows 7, I can see audio being played in the volume mixer, but I hear nothing. Using a headset connected directly to the computer works fine.
