Digital Rights and my PVR

I have an Ati AIW9600xt which I purchased for a home theatre setup.

When I try to record from my Dishnet reciever - a window pops up after
an hour or so telling me I don't own digital rights to the broadcast -
and it shuts down my software.

Help, I understand it doesn't happen that way with Beyond Tv, or Sage
Tv.

Any help greatly appreciated.

I would complain to ATI about this. As far as I know, there is no law on
the books preventing you from recording *anything* for personal use.

Well, there's no law keeping the broadcasters and hardware designers from
implementing copy protection schemes either. So I doubt this is a point of
law.

There are a few schemes to prevent recording, THEY ARE NOT LAW however,

I have a Portable DVD player that warns that many DVD's are encoded with
MacroVision and any attempt to copy the DVD will be distorted as a
result... I also have DVD Shrink which says "Macrovision" and then laughs

One of those systems is "Serial Copy Management System", SCMS is
designed to prevent you from making a copy of a copy. SCMS (and it's
successor "Digital Rights Management System" is a way of encoding a
digital stream so that it says "Do not copy"

Many devices, including, it appears, the ATI card you have, are designed
to respect those management systems. This is a "Feature" not a bug, so
complaining won't help

The solution is to record an analog stream, You will loose some detail,
but you will be able to obtain a copy that way.... My ATI card is analog
inputs (RV or NTSC) only so I don't have that problem

My inputs are analog also.. svhs in - that's why I'm complaining.

Is it anything at all that you record? Even a public interest channel or a
shopping channel?

DRM should not work on an Analog input. Wonder how they encoded it.

Oh well... That should be S-video by the way not S-VHS (Which is a tape
format)

Yes, if it's popping up digital rights warnings on an analog input I
would complain. Or at the very least try uninstalling and re-installing
the software, it should not do that.

Those "protection" things ARE annoying. It should be illegal to have
equipment try to enforce them. Maybe it would be if we had a
government that cared about people at least much as about
corporations.

Mainly sports, I'm trying to record Figure Skating from ESPN, ESPN2,
and ABC, NBC!
If I record from my cable tv it's fine, just from my Dishnet which has
a gorgeous picture..
