I have a dish network dish on my roof and I want to purchase a DVB PCI card
to get a DVB broadcast. Will the dish network dish receive these signals if
I reposition it or do I need a new dish?

I think the only thing FTA you can get with that dish is some music
and the NASA channel on 119.

You really need a linear LNB to receive KU signal's from the other
sat's. The LNBF that your dish has uses circular polarity.

Also, once you get another dish I would not mount it on the top of my
roof at first because you probably would want to have easy access to
it to tune it and turn it to other sat's.

Have fun!

Does that mean I need to get a big ole 30" dish too? Is the LNB just the
piece that goes in the center of the dish? Sorry I am new to satellite.
Will one of these do? http://www.sadoun.com/Sat/Order/LNBFs.htm

If you are talking about the FTA DVB stuff, you will need a different
LNBF. Dish Network uses a circularly polarized LNBF as does DirecTV while
most of the FTA stuff uses a linearly polarized LNBF.

You will probably also need a slightly larger dish. Mine is 30 inches in
diameter.

Having said that .... there are dozens of channels available free and in
the clear from the Dish Network satellites. Most of the FREE ones are
music channels but a few of them are video and are there for all to watch
(or listen) so if you are interested in experimenting with your new DVB
PCI card, you should be able to find something with that dish without
even touching it. For a complete listing of the currently available FREE
channels just look at the following two pages ...

http://www.lyngsat.com/packages/dish110.html
http://www.lyngsat.com/packages/dish119.html

The channels which are currently FREE are shown on the lines which have
the yellow backgrounds and have a small blue square which contains the
letter "F". The channels shown on the pinkish backgrounds are the
encrypted ones.

Perhaps you could experiment with these channels with your new PCI card
and then "upgrade" to a linear LNBF to get the other satellites.

Some people will say that this ammounts to "signal theft" but don't let
that bother you. It is an interesting hobby and I encourage you to try
it. I myself am what in known as a "Reverse signal thief". For the past
10 years I have paid a monthly subscription fee to DirecTV for their
"Total Choice" package, and I have not watched a single thing on it since
the invasion of Iraq when I stayed up all night for a week watching
Headline News Channel and CNN. I am addicted to PBS programming but I
have four local PBS channels available over the local airways which
includes an HDTV channel and two digital channels and one analog PBS
channel. PBS is also available via FTA-DVB on the AMC3 satellite, but
they only broadcast using Digital Dolby sound and I don't know if the PCI
cards are capable of doing Dolby Digital. My Fortec Lifetime receiver
does the Dolby Digital ok.

Good Luck ...... PON
