DNS setting issue

I guess my brother downloaded anti virus or new program which changed settings.
now certain sites like Facebook gives me this massage: DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN

while others like Stardoll a dress up site end up directing me to XAMPP which is very weird since its a normal online site.
it should be just http://www.stardoll.com/
but this what happens when i enter URL check screen shot: http://i.imgur.com/ciGe1p2.jpg
and if i clicked on the stardoll link in this page it end up directing me to URL like this with XAMPP page:
http://www.stardoll.com/xampp/
screen shot:

I tried many things like changing adapter DNS setting, restarting DNS, but didn't work, I think it might be firewall settings changed? if so what should I do?
I'm using Windows 7
browsers Google Chrome and Firefox, both same message even when i tried Google Chrome incognito page.
also this issue seem in my whole devices so it might not be firewall I'm really confused, my android devices give same DNS message with Facebook and for Stardoll the webpage not available.

i tried Facebook app it works fine, and Stardoll on Puffin works fine too, but that's because Puffin has its own settings and proxy.

Maren,

Not sure at all what your brother has done but XAMPP is used for website testing without actually going out on the internet.

Here is the relevant link to wikipedia to provide more information:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XAMPP

I also "googled" the DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN error message. There are various solutions available.

Here is one of them:

https://www.xtremerain.com/tech/solutions/blog-id-1577

He may also have made changes to the hosts file on the computer you are using.

More information here:

http://www.firewall.cx/microsoft-knowledgebase/windows-8/1080-windows-hosts-file-usage-and-importance.html

Hopefully the above links will either help you identify and resolve the problem directly or otherwise lead you to a solution.

Take a look and please post any further questions. Thanks.

my brother fixed Facebook now it works fine, but for Stardoll same message as I posted in screen shots although now it just say webpage not available like my other devices. and he told me before about XAMPP thats why I'm wondering why Stardoll directed me at first to XAMPP. Stardoll work fine as i mentioned on Puffin and for all my friends who play it around world, the problem in my net/device settings what could be possibly the problem? is it like the second site you provided a firewall, host setting?
my brother did search in firewall, he found Facebook only blocked thats how he enabled it and made it work fine, but didn't find anything for Stardoll.

Puffin is probably using a different internet path to get to Stardoll. I.e., no problems getting to Puffin and then no problems getting to Stardoll from Puffin.

He may need to dig a bit deeper with regards to Stardoll so the site will become reachable again. Maybe there is some port-forwarding requirement. I am not familar with the game or what the required settings may be.

Will suggest that you go forward with the following for now:

The second link presents two solutions to the error message you are getting. The first solution changes the location of the DNS Server to Google. The second solution resets your network adapter software to a default state and may resolve some browsing issues.

You can use ping and tracert via the Command mode in Windows to see if you can reach the stardoll site. Tracert will show you the path being taken (hops) and where there are delays or stoppages. Try pings and tracert to Google, Stardoll, and Puffin.

Please post what you find.

I tried changing to DNS server of google, but didn't work. I want to leave resting network adapter last option if possible so I wont need to re-change whole current settings.
well Stardoll give me this message on command prompt, ping and tracert

Maren,

Thank you.

I tried both sites and had no problems hitting the home page of either site.

My ping and tracert times are about 1/4 of your times. (My route is starting from the mid-Atlantic coast area.) End IP's matched so I know I am hitting the same site. It does appear if there are some connectivity problems along the way for you.

Understand wanting to leave the network adapter as a last option....

Maybe just keep trying some additional pings and tracert tests just to see if there is any improvement or consistency.

What happened/did not happen when you tried changing to DNS server to Google (8.8.8.8 and/or 8.8.4.4)?

I will try. it seem like I'm getting different result each time i try now 6 which said time out now get numbers, while others get sometimes *
nothing changed when i tried changing to google DNS server.

Different results would be expected. The path taken will vary and change.

If you can get to Stardoll via other locations or computers then there is still something getting in the way on your end such as a firewall.

Where did you make the change to go to Google DNS Server?

Were you able to look for and at the hosts file?

I am not sure what else XAMPP might have changed.

If you are familiar with the process try regedit and search for XAMPP. Back up the registry first, as always, and don't make any changes. Just look to see if there are any related references.

nothing working yet and strange thing Facebook now give me DNS message again sometimes then work fine later.

Who is your ISP and what router are you using? Was the router provided by your ISP? Could be that the ISP DNS servers are not as they should be. Or the connectivity to them.

Can you run and post your ipconfig /all results?

Is your brother still working on the problem or making other system changes for gaming, music or video downloading etc.?

Have you tried resetting the DNS server to Google's sites again? If so, where did you attempt to make the change?

Thanks.
