Do android media boxes have malware protection? And can a pre-loaded box be wiped?

I have some questions about Android media boxes.

1. I have looked at a few. For example the Minix NEO-U1 Android Media Player. Does it have any malware protection? Can they be hacked? Can someone spy on you with them?

I think it is possible to watch what content is on someones media box, or see their history or even download from them, so I am a bit concerned. I also do not know if the manufacturers have installed hardware that is spyware?

2. If a person buys a pre-loaded media box from Amazon or ebay or something, can they be wiped out so the apps can be re-insalled clean and everything re-configured? I know it is a gamble to buy these and I am just curious.
