Do I need an HDMI cable?

Does a smart tv require an hdmi cable to get hd reception with times warner cable if I have a wireless router in another room?

Not sure what the wireless router has to do with it. You will need an HDMI cable to connect the cable box to the TV for HD. If you don't have a box you would either us a digital adapter which would connect to the coax cable line and your TV with RF cable or connect the RF cable directly to the TV RF input. Your TV would need to have an HD tuner built in.
