Hi all,

I've found a few threads (here and elsewhere) but none really answered whether this is possible:

I'd like two connect two 2560 × 1440 monitors @144 Hz via a docking station to my laptop.

Monitors
2x Dell S-Series 27-Inch Screen LED-Lit Gaming Monitor (S2719DGF); QHD (2560 x 1440) @ 140 Hz
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00N2L5CXO/

Docking Station
https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/pd500333 (my laptop is supported)
Possible monitor setups: https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/pd029622 and resolutions @ 60 Hz

Question
The possible monitor setup link above mentions the ability to use 2x 3840x2160 @ 60 Hz. All the maximum frequencies are capped at 60 Hz, is that a hard limit for some reason? 3840x2160 is 2.25x the pixels of 2560x1440, so could I power 2x that resolution at 60 Hz x 2.25 = 135 Hz (and maybe slightly more)? Sorry if this is not how the "math" works on this one. Not a techie.

Thank you,
Moritz

Laptop
Lenovo X1 Extreme Gen 2
9th Gen Intel® Core™ i7-9750H (2.60GHz, up to 4.50GHz with Turbo Boost, 6 Cores, 12MB Cache)
32GB (16GB + 16GB) DDR4 2666MHz
1TB SSD PCIe
15.6" UHD (3840 x 2160), OLED, AR/AS, multi-touch with Dolby Vision™ HDR 500 with IR & 720p HD Camera, 400 nits
VIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1650 Max-Q 4GB
135 Watt AC

Solution
I would try the docking station @ 144Hz
could work or not, the specs are not that clear

only statement for this dock is that it supports DP1.4 which should be able to get your two monitors running @144hz and the 2560 × 1440 resolution

The issue is that the docking stations wont have the bandwidth to run such a high rez and refresh rate signal. If the docking stations are capped at 60 there is nothing anyone can do, you would have to talk to Lenovo support and ask why the specs are what they are. If you really want to run dual monitors this way you may need a desktop with a real video card.

Thank you both for the replies, and apologies for my delayed response.

I agree it's not 100% clear from the specifications—I'll just order ahead and test it out, and return if it doesn't work.

The alternative would be plugging two monitors and an external keyboard directly into the laptop (which can power up to 4 external monitors, it's quite a beast). But I do like the one plug solution vs. having to connect and disconnect two monitors + keyboard every time. Plus the external power button on the Lenovo docking station is a nice touch.

I'll come back here to report whether it worked or not.
