Does higher screen resolution increase "choppiness" and decrease fps?

Hi, I have a 2015 macbook pro (without retina), and the specifications say that it will support up to 2560x1600 on an external display, which is higher than the built-in resolution of 1280x800. If I get an external monitor (probably 1920x1080) and use the higher resolution, will this make things run slower on my computer and decrease fps? I'm not a gamer, but I would still like everything to run as smoothly as it does on the laptop itself, just with a sharper display. Thanks!
