I own a Sony HDR-CX260V. Would getting a Canon Rebel T3i be an upgrade for film-making?

You will definitely have more control and can use a variety of lenses. Yes, I think this would be a step up. You could also download Magic Lantern to add even more control and unlock some features of that camera.
