Dumb question regarding sennheiser g4me one headset

I got the sennheiser g4me one headset and this is my first gaming headset, so I am quite a noob when it comes to anything audio. It has the green 3.5mm cable for the speakers and a pink 3.5mm for the microphone. When I plug it in only using the green cable the microphone works as well so my question is what is the pink mic cable for if I don't need it plugged in for the mic to work?

The only way I can see that working is if it has an extra ring on the connector. Does it have 3 little black rings on the connector or just two?

If it doesn't, then the pink connector should be needed for the mic work.
