your missing the point. i dont want, nor can i install (no admin rights) any software. i want a simple program that runs completely contained, doesnt need any registry keys, or need to register any dlls, nothing like that. and absolutely no windows machine of any version can play dvds, you have to install a 3rd party dvd program. after that is installed the codecs are available to other programs. such as media player.

There are wmp codecs avaliable that will let you play dvds in wmp. You have to buy them though and they cost a lot :(
You will also run into the problem of not being able to install them though.

If you have 2 cdrom drives try downloading the knoppix live cd, booting it in one drive, and using its dvd player. I think the latest knoppix has a dvd player in it. If it doesn't someone please correct me.
Knoppix is a fully functional linux os that boots off a cdrom. It wont touch your hard drives at all.

it seems to me that dvd is just mpeg, but you need the codecs to decrypt the files before they can play. it should be possible to make a software player that can play the files. programs like dvd decrypter dont require installs or reg changes.
