I have just basic cable thru time warner and am pretty satisfied. I don't want to pay the expenseive monthly fees for the DVR and extra channels. Do any of the after market DVR's allow recording, pausing of cable content?

A PVR like this one

does have a QAM tuner in it but without trying it you can't know how many channels it would pick up,
If your TV has a QAM cable tuner built in then connect the cable to the TV directly, set the tuner to QAM and run a scan to see what channels you get. If you don't get any then you are stuck with the additional expense of a DVR. Your cable company doesn't want to make it easy for you to avoid the monthly fees.
