I know this isn't a tablet or e reader section but I figured its the closet I can find.

If you had to pick 1 E-Book Reader, which would it be? Touch screen would be nice but surfing the web and all that other jazz doesn't sound that special to me. Especially when I have a macbook and a smartphone already, basically I don't want to blow the $500+ on a tablet because I'm not that materialistic.

I read that the basic kindle is the best for day time reading because its very easy to see in the sun unlike those with LCD screens.

Hello Delengowski;

I would chose a reader based on which service has the best and most useful content you want. Book service? Magazine service?

For Amazon that would be the Kindle3. For Barnes & Noble it would be Nook Simple Touch Reader.

If you're going to spend any time in the sun or other bright places you'll want the E-ink readers over the LCD screen readers.

Here is a counter view from C/Net that may or may not apply to you.
Why you shouldn't buy an e-reader
