elevation question for line of sight ?

Hi there,

I am looking for a spot in my yard to place my new motorized dish.
After calculating the elevation of most of the birds, they were 40-50
degrees. I used a gravity protractor I bought at Home Depot and it
looks like I have a clear view to them at one particular spot in the
yard. I'm guessing since I have a clear view at the elevations, this
would be a good spot to install the dish? Most of the other spots in
the yard had a lot of trees. I bought the system from Sadoun, they
have a lot of info on thier web site, but I couldn't find an answer
for this question. Many thanks for your reply. I live in Alabama.

You need a chart of all the satellites you want to
be able to "see" with your dish, listing the elevation
and azimuth for each one. Stand at your spot and site
azimuth first, then elevation (makes it somewhat easier
this way). If there's a tree in the way, pick another
spot. It doesn't get any easier than this... also, take
into account vegetation growth. If there's a tree in a
neighbor's yard that -might- grow into the path of your
dish for the length of time you plan to live wherever
you are, you might not want to put the dish at that
spot.

You can download the Satfinder program from this link on our website.

Great program for finding the location of each satellite based on your
location.

Thanks for your help, but I have already located the satellite
locations with the Satfinder program. What I was wondering was, if
the location lists the elevation as 51 degrees, is that the actual
line of sight that the dish would need a clear view of? Sorry if I
didn't ask my original question in the correct way. Most of the trees
have already reached thier maximum height, the ones that were any
taller than that, Ivan the hurricane blew over!

Kyle,

Stand in the location that you have selected to mount the dish. If a
obstacle blocks the azimuth / elevation coordinates of any of the satellites
on the Satfinder print out, you will not be able to receive that specific
bird. If the Satfinder indicates that the bird is at 51 degrees elevation
and 180 degrees magnetic azimuth, then you will need to have a clear view in
order to receive the satellite signal. Site for the for all sides of the
dish, top, bottom, left, right and note that limbs droop and sway with the
weather conditions.

When aiming an offset dish, don't confuse the above paragraph addressing the
necessary clear line of site with the apparent angle that the dish is
looking at. The offset of a dish makes the dish appear to be pointed at a
location lower than the actual position.

Remember that the arc of satellites starts on the eastern horizon at zero
degrees raises up to the top of the arc at your true south and drops to zero
elevation on the western horizon.

Good luck with your site check!

It's getting real close to the time the sun tracks the arc. If your
proposed spot can see the sun all day you will be fine.
You also need to take the azimuth into account, a clear view to 50
degrees elevation won't help if it is due north.

Yes (remember that the dish will probably be an offset type, so the
plane of the dish will point lower that it will actially receive.

Ok, I understand now. I thought that was how the elevation worked but
wanted to make sure before I started pouring concrete for a post. Some
of the most Eastern and Western satellites I am not going to be able
to receive, no matter where I would site the dish. Most of them
though, are not obscured. Thank you for informing me about the
apparent angle of the dish. I might have become confused again if you
had not told me that info. Thanks again to all who replied!
