Email: Alias or separate account? (Which is better?)

I'm just curious as to how people manage their email accounts in hopes of knowing the best way to go about it.

Since we have things like aliases for email addresses now, I was wondering, when you have two email addresses (one personal and one for work), is it better to keep them as separate accounts or link them up as aliases?

Please let me know the pros and cons

It provides a layer of privacy (through obscurity).
You have control over your professional appearance.
Avoids information overload, for you.

Cons to Keeping Your Identities Separate

Requires you to maintain separate accounts/personae in different places.
Splits your audience
