I am trying to use my emerson tv as a monitor to my laptop. Do I need a specific driver to do this.

No you don't need to install a driver, but the TV must be a dual TV/Monitor model with an appropriate connector on the back of it to connect to your laptop's external monitor port (eg D-Sub, DVI or HDMI). If your TV only has TV antenna input you can't use it as a monitor.
