Enabling 5.1 on pc>tv>optical output

I have a Vizio tv with a receiver connected via optical cable but receiver is not receiving a 5.1 connection according to receiver. In Sound settings (Windows 10 64bit) the speaker configurations only shows "Stereo"

why are you connecting pc->tv->avr instead of pc->avr->tv?

some televisions even if accepting a 5.1 signal do not output a 5.1 signal on optical. instead, some only support 5.1 on optical on just content they output (from apps, etc)

or, if the avr has no hdmi out, you could connect pc->avr and pc->tv via separate connections .

My receiver has no hdmi input nor does my computer have a optical output

are you quite certain your receiver even supports 5.1 over optical? not all do.
