Experiencing distortion when playing songs

Recently some songs I play on my external speakers connected to my computer, start to distort when they get high-pitched. This seems to be a recent problem and I haven't fiddled with any sound settings. They are connected via the same jack that you would use to connect headphones to a phone.

Open media player and turn off the WOW bass boost.

Does that make a difference if you don't play the songs in WMP?
