external hard drive to panasonic blu-ray disc recorder usb

I have a Panasonic blu-ray disc recorder model number dmr-bw880 / dmr-bw780 and what I want to know is can I put all movies I have got off the net and put on external hard drive then connect hard drive to blue-ray disc recorder usb slot. Will I be able to select a movie and watch it doing it this way or not. hope someone can please help me and let me know what I can do to get it to work, Thanks
