Firewalls in Gaming

I'm writing a college assignment to go along with the game I am developing, why in multiplayer games are firewalls important?

Well, you should probably be doing this research for yourself.

The firewall will provide 'lanes' (ports) for you to communicate with the server and other players and only allows those people to communicate with your computer and only if they are also communicating through the same ports.

Now if we remove the firewall, everyone will be able to freely communicate with your computer, whether there intentions are harmless or not.
Even random people who are not even in your game will be able to connect to you and communicate. the internet would probably be a much more insecure place.
