I'm trying to get into some better audio equipment. I'm no audiophile or anything, but I do have heightened hearing and musical sense so to speak, and I have always wanted better and better speakers or headphones. The two I am really looking at right now are the Sony CD900st and the V6, but because I am new in this more professional audio area, I just want to get some pointers to help me with my choice.

So my situation is that, even though I can pick up the quality differences in a lot of sound, all of my equipment and resources are extremely primitive. Regular sound card built into the motherboard, using too much YouTube for music, all MP3s (no AAC or FLAC). Really, it would be too expensive or inconvenient at my current point of interest to change these habits or parts, so I'm really looking to buy a pair of headphones and be done with it. My headphones are usually just going to be used like stated above, or plugged into my phone. That being said, my main worry would be that these headphones would be overkill. Would that be possible? Is it pointless to use headphones of this quality in this way? Also, are these suitable for just a beginner audiophile? I don't want to feel like needing an upgrade for many many years. What do you guys think?

If you have suggestions on other headphones, I'll hear you out, but really I am primarily interested in the CD900st, V6, and 7506.

If you consider yourself a budding audiophile why not consider something other than Sony. Grado headphones are ot expensive and even the entry level SR60e are excellent. Don't be afraid to spend a bit more. If you have good hearing and concentrate on your music when you listen a better headphone is worth every penny. You can work at improving your source later.
You can try the forum at headfi.org for a some advice too,

Other alternatives to the MDR-V6, MDR-7506 or CD900ST could be the AurvanaLive!1, M40X, SRH440, NVX XPT100, HM5, SHP9500, K612*(needs amp), HD558*(they can be foam modded to be a HD598 see youtube/google) in no particular order. Or the SRH840 as an alternative to the CD900ST. The Grado SR60e is good. I have the Grado SR60i which is the previous model but it could sound a tad high in treble for you. I'm fine with mine and they were bought back in 2013. I really suggest getting either Grado L-Cush or G-Cush replacement pads. Best of luck, I hope you choose a good headphone.
