Formatting a SanDisk 64 GB MicroSD XC card to FAT32

Jan 24, 2015
Hi guys and gals,

Today I just purchased a New Nintendo 3DS XL handheld gaming system. I'm a bit confused. I've read Nintendo's website where they've said that they've only tested 32GB microSD cards for use in their latest handheld system. However, I've also read online that there have been some people who have successfully used a 64 GB microSD card in their system. However, they have stated that they have formatted their 64 GB microSD card to FAT32 with a 32kb cache. I picked up a SanDisk Ultra 64GB micoSD XC card with adapter to go along with my New Nintendo 3DS XL. Does anyone know how to go about formatting my microSD card to FAT32 with 32kb cache. Nintendo's website has a link to a website that will format SD cards / microSD cards.

Any help would be appreciated.

They probably meant 32 KB cluster size, which is the default for FAT32 on drives 32GB or larger. Basically, the cluster size is the minimum size of a file on the card. That is, even if you have a 1 byte file, it will still take up 32 KB of space.

Edit: Oh I see your problem. Windows won't format a drive larger than 32GB as FAT32. Try these. The sdcard utility should work too.
