Solution
I think I would first suggest a thorough cleaning for the laptop. Often, after a year (or more) of use, the vents become clogged making the laptop throttle itself to keep from overheating. This video shows what is involved in getting into the laptop http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XkmW9vMBoDc
You can run CoreTemp http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/ to ensure that temperatures (and throttling) are the issue
Doing that may save you a lot of headaches
Another common cause of that behavior is driver conflicts but I'll suggest checking your temps first
