From previous contract phone to a prepaid plan

I'm buying a phone from a friend,, they upgraded so their phone isn't on the contract for Verizon anymore so can I use it as a prepaid phone?

You should be able to do that but probably not with the Verizon linked SIM in place. Buy a SIM for prepayment and unless the phone needs unlocking you should be good to go.
