**I received one in for service a couple of weeks ago. Pretty standard
faults. All the grease had hardened in the mechanism. ah heck of a job, since
the mech needs to be stripped down, the grease cleaned out and the whole
thing re-lubed. About 2.5 hours and AUS$200.00. I called the client with the
bad news and he said: "Fine, fix it." When he collected it, I asked him why
he wanted it repaired. He told me that he had just sold it for AUS$900.00. A
week later, I visited a client's store and noticed TWO Technics RS 1500 R/R
machines. Now these guys are arguably the pinnacle of semi-pro/domestic
machines. He has no intention of selling them, but indicated a price of
around AUS$1500.00 is about the right value. He agreed that the Pioneer was
highly sought after due to it's rack mounting capability. As are some of the
ReVox machines. Weird.

Very weird. Around here, quarter track machines are thick on the ground
and you can't give them away. I sold my last A-77 (with a rackmount flange)
for around $100 not too long ago. But if you have a local market for it,
by all means you might want to start importing used ones!

Weird. Around here, the A-77 was worth more used than the B-77 was, because
the B-77 was prone to failure of the pushbutton assembly which basically
rendered the machine worthless since the replacement parts cost far more
than the machine.

And the PR-99 is a real sleeper because nobody seems to have a clue what
it really is. The PR-99 sells for less than the B-77 for the most part.

What are the pro model Otari 5050BX's going for? These are very heavy duty
machines and I have 3 in very good condition.

**Otari make great machines, but they never sell as well as ReVox (for no
good reason, AFICT). I don't know what your machines are worth.

Speaking of the A77, I just watched the biopic BEYOND THE SEA, about the life
of Bobby Darin, and was appalled to see them using a Revox B77 in several
scenes where they needed a reel-to-reel deck in the shot. You saw the same
machine in Darin's house, at a recording studio, and I think again at a
broadcast station... and this was supposed to be the 1960s. Yeah, right.

They did at least get the microphones right most of the time.
