I'm really only looking to game in 1080p, for which the 980 seems more than adequate with an i6700K, which is the current Sager/Clevo laptop I'm in love with and strongly considering to purchase. Considering the 1070 is about to come out and will supposedly be available in laptops around August/September, should I wait? Everything I've been available to find on the 1070 seems to put in the category of severe overkill for 1080p. However, I do want something that will stand the test of time for the next 4-5 years. Thanks in advance for you advice and/or opinions.

"Severe overkill" now, "good enough" in 3-5 years is what I say. If not for the raw performance, I'd wait for the much better performance in VR. If you asked 3 months ago I'd tell you not to wait, but laptops with the 1070 are literally around the corner at this point. The 1070 will also cost you less than a 980.

There will always be the next greatest thing around the corner. Always.

Any top of the line graphics card will last you 5 years. I buy a whole new computer every 5 years and spec it out to a (reasonable) high end setup and use it until it can't keep up any more. Honestly I'm at 4 years right now with a gtx680 and I'm not even considering upgrading. I run 3 monitors 1080p and everything is still very smooth.

My advice would be to grab what you want and start actually using the tech now. All you're doing is hoping that a 1070 will tack on another 6 months to a year of lifespan on your computer rig. It will, and you know why? Because you waited 6 months to a year for it to become available in laptop form.

a 1070 for 1080p is only useful if you want to run games at around 144FPS, which of course requires a 144Hz monitor. unless you already have a 144Hz monitor there is no point in upgrading.
