I am having trouble deciding on a laptop. Any advice would be much appreciated!

1. What is your budget?

1000-1200

2. What is the size of the notebook that you are considering?

15-16

3. What screen resolution do you want?

1366x768 is fine. 1920 X 1080 would be nice.

4. Do you need a portable or desktop replacement laptop?
Something between the two. I have a desktop that I do most of my gaming on so the laptop doesn't need to be a beast or anything. It also doesn't need to be ultra portable.

5. How much battery life do you need?
Doesn't matter

6. Do you want to play games with your laptop? If so then please list the games that you want to with the settings that you want for these games. (Low,Medium or High)?

Absolutely. Portal 2, Fallout 3/New Vegas, Starcraft II, Civ V. High would be nice, but I think medium would suffice since it isn't my main gaming rig.

7. What other tasks do you want to do with your laptop? (Photo/Video editing, Etc.)

Nothing particular. Might need to bring it to school now and then but not a lot. Possibly some movies/music.

8. How much storage (Hard Drive capacity) do you need?

Anything that laptops come in these days would suffice.

9. If you are considering specific sites to buy from, please post their links.

www.amazon.com
www.newegg.com

10. How long do you want to keep your laptop?
About 3 years give or take.

11. What kind of Optical drive do you need? DVD ROM/Writer,Bluray ROM/Writer,Etc ?

Blu-ray would be nice. I could live without it if I had to.

12. Please tell us about the brands that you prefer to buy from them and the brands that you don't like and explain the reasons.

I was/am a fan of Asus as I have many parts from them in my desktop and was considering the the G53 series from them but after hearing many complaints about the power button and other things and bad tech support I don't know anymore. Otherwise have heard they are great quality.

Really, I am open to any brand. I have owned a mac laptop for the last 7-8 years so I don't have any thoughts on any of them.

13. What country do you live in?

United States

14. Please tell us any additional information if needed.

Like I said, was considering the Asus G53 but it seems like it is a massive laptop and has had some issues. Also looking at Alienware m14x. Also considering this Asus:

I think where I am really conflicted is over the GPU. From what I understand the Nvidia 540M would do what I want for the most part right now with games on medium at 1366 X 768 resolution. My concern is if it will be able to keep up a few years from now. But everything with a Nvidia 460m seems pretty hefty and big.

I was going to suggest the Alienware m14x too. It's probably going to be at least a bit above your price range after customization and such, but it's probably the one that fits your requirements the best, with a very good graphics card, and a high res screen (which is kinda rare on laptops of this size).

In all honesty, don't try to future-proof laptops. New games that will come out in 2+ years or so will tax even the most ridiculous Crossfire or SLI equipped laptop today, so just plan for today, maybe the next year, and don't worry about it beyond that 😛

Since you don't care about battery life, instead of the Asus you posted, I would recommend the Lenovo Y570 or Y470, which are equipped with measurably better graphics cards when compared with that Asus. I honestly hadn't even thought about a Lenovo, so thanks for pointing those out. I agree I do like the Alienware m14x but you are right, when you start customizing the price goes up pretty quick.

So you would say that when it comes to Nvidia 540m vs 460m or whatever you compare, that in one or two years it really won't matter all that much because they will both be behind a little bit?

I have only ever had 13 inch notebooks for the last two that I have owned. Can anyone tell me, at a 15.6 inch screen does 1366 X 768 look much worse than 1920 X 1080? I tried to go to Best Buy and see with my own eyes but all the laptops they had there were 1366 X 768 so I couldn't compare.

Err... "much worse" is a very very subjective opinion... I think 1366 x 768 looks fine, but my friend would think that it's terrible... If you dont have a problem with it so far, you'll probably be fine.

pick between xm15 or xm17.

I know digital storm is maybe not so well known BUT TRUST ME, after seeing my friends laptop, its definitely better than alienware m14x. JUST GO COMPARE THE SPECS THEN LOOK AT THE PRICE. Alienware's price already went up so much just to match digital storm's base config/price. Also excellent testing + Customer service(they speak perfect english + EXPERTS) and 3 yr warranty vs dell's 1 yr
