How good is this laptop?

Mid-range. It has a great processor, but a mid-range video card. Couple with the full HD screen it will not perform that well in some of the latest titles.

You can get the same components in a brand new machine from companies like Lenovo. Though perhaps not a 17.3" laptop (Which hopefully has better cooling)

The CPU is very good and the graphics card is an upper mid-range card. It has very good specs for a gaming laptop. The GPU performs similarly to a desktop GTX 480.

Would a refurbished laptop be recommended?

And how does it compare to the Lenovo y50?
